Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Nears Completion of New Laboratories

WOODS HOLE, MASS. -

Construction of two new laboratories and a central energy plant upgrade for Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is nearing completion on its Quisset Campus in Woods Hole, Mass. One laboratory, the 32,000-sf marine research facility, was constructed primarily for researchers to study marine mammals and their environment. The second new building is a 35,000-sf biogeochemistry laboratory to study organic materials in the marine environment. The two laboratories increase the Institution's scientific research space by more than 20 percent.

Construction of the central energy plant involved complete renovation of the existing plant for new boilers and new chilled water pumps, an addition for new chillers and electrical switchgear, and an exterior equipment yard for new cooling towers and emergency generators. The upgrade to the plant provides 1400 tons of cooling to the campus. Designed by Ellenzweig Associates, this building program took 22 months to complete. Skanska was the program manager. Bond Brothers also built an addition to house a new mass spectrometer at the McLean Laboratory and is currently constructing a core storage addition there.
