The new 54,000-sf police station in Woodland , Calif., will be one of the nation’s first police stations to be LEED™ certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. The project was a unique partnership with the City of Woodland , McCarthy Construction, and LPA . The design-build facility has functions for dispatch, C.I.D., patrol, evidence processing and storage, booking, detoxification and holding cells, as well as a community/E.O.C. room.

The police station’s “green” features exceed California ’s Title 24 emergency code requirements by 23.6 percent and reduce water consumption by 30 percent. Approximately 75 percent of the construction waste was recycled. The central atrium is the major “green” feature of the main building. The north-facing clerestory brings consistent natural light into the interior during the day. With the help of daylight monitoring and an interior translucent glass system, the atrium pours natural light into the building core and office spaces, reducing the use of electricity and artificial lighting. The atrium also exhausts hot air through louvers along the daylight monitor. Photovoltaic panels have been planned for the south-facing roof elevation in the future.
