Johnson Controls to Supply Chillers to Qatar's Pearl Island

PEARL ISLAND, QATAR -

Qatar Cool, the district cooling authority for the Pearl Island of Qatar in the Arabian Gulf, has contracted Johnson Controls to provide 46 water-cooled chiller units with an option to purchase six additional units. The order is the largest in Johnson Control’s history. The YORK centrifugal chillers, each weighing 2,500 tons, will supply 130,000 tons of chilled water daily to cool over 15,000 residential and commercial units on the 985-acre manmade island.

Project considerations include a recent law passed by Qatar to monitor and phase out the import of ozone depleting substances. The highly efficient YORK chillers use the non-ozone-depleting HFC-134a refrigerant. The project will also reduce operating costs, as the YORK chiller needs half the electrical switchgear normally required, and will be operated by the Johnson Controls  Metasys® building automation system for optimum efficiency. Installation is slated to begin in December 2007 and continue through May 2008.
