University of North Carolina Hospitals Breaks Ground on Cancer Hospital

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

University of North Carolina Hospitals broke ground in October 2005 on the new North Carolina Cancer Hospital in Chapel Hill. Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership of Seattle is the architect of record for the project with Skanska USA Building of Parsippany, N.J., as general contractor. The seven-story, 320,000-sf clinical building is projected to open in 2009 and will combine cancer treatment and research. The 105,000-sf Physician's Office Building component of the project will open in 2008. Including teleconferencing facilities, large lobbies, and serene treatment spaces, the $180-million cancer center will replace a 1950's-era sanatorium facility.
