University of Toronto Begins Planning New Research Center
(Madison, Wisconsin) ? April 2, 2002 - The University of Toronto has selected Flad & Associates as the lab planner/programmer for its Center for Cellular and Biomolecular Research (CCBR).
The facility will be a 200,000-sf, 12-story biomedical research building. The facility is being designed for a range of uses and is being planned to accommodate members from three different faculties--medicine, engineering and pharmacy--who work in the area of cellular and biomedical research. The CCBR will cross over traditional barriers between medicine, pharmacy and bioengineering to create a sophisticated and uniquely multi-disciplinary biomedical research complex. The facility is expected to be an advanced research center capable of competing with the world's top research and development institutions.
The CCBR will be part of the new two-building Health Science Complex and will provide the sophisticated laboratories and tools to enable the university to build on its strengths in biomolecular research. The new complex is being designed with respect for the historic importance of the neighboring buildings.
Other project team members include Behnisch & Behnisch of Stuttgart, Germany (design architect); and Architects Alliance of Toronto (architect of record). The CCBR is due for completion by mid-2005.
