Boston, MA - Shawmut Design and Construction has been busy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology managing multiple projects, including the Center for Space Research and Center for Environmental Health. Boston-based Linea 5 served as the architect for both projects.

Located in MIT's Building N52, the Center for Environmental Health project involved an occupied renovation to create 15,000 square feet of technologically advanced laboratories and offices. It included building the infrastructure, including gas, acid neutralization, and de-ionized and reverse-osmosis water systems, to support new uses. Two new air-handling units, exhaust fans, switchgear, and a transformer were all installed during the renovation, which was completed on an aggressive summer schedule. The renovated space also included a library, conference room, and kitchen.

Located in MIT's Building 37, the Center for Space Research project involved selective interior demolition and renovation of 18,600 square feet. Shawmut completed this project in three phases, using a second shift to renovate 2,500 square feet, while the six-floor building remained occupied. It included upgrading M/E/P systems, fire protection systems, and the tel/data infrastructure as well as the fit-out of new offices, conference rooms, computer labs, a library, and kitchenette.
