Skil-aire's "Satellite" Environmental Cooling System Providing Exacting A/C and Humidity Control While Offering Flexibility in Installation
BALTIMORE, Md.--Skil-aire, a leader in precision air conditioning, purification, and environmental control systems, announces its new line of Satellite Environmental Cooling systems - specifically designed to check high "sensible" loads created within rooms housing heat-generating equipment such as Web and data-storage servers, telecom switching equipment, laser printers, bank ATMs, and MRI and CAT scan imaging systems. Available in capacities of two to 15 tons, these compact models offer precise relative humidity control and air conditioning for virtually any enclosure, even in remote "satellite" locations throughout a building. Such flexibility in installation is made possible because the evaporator and condenser can be separated in the field, up to 150 feet without losing the refrigerant charge.
"The problem with computer-room air conditioners is that they are packaged within one cabinet, and when they are delivered to the building site the installation contractor or facilities engineer often discovers that the unit won't fit into the prescribed space," says Lisa Ambrose, president of Skil-aire. "There is always something in the way, like a bearing wall or beam, to make installation difficult. But with the option of splitting the cabinet, our Satellite Cooling Systems can fit into tight, difficult spaces above or below or beside the room to be cooled. All you have to do is run a couple of small pipelines between them. A contractor can make the job work without having to re-specify the cooling equipment."
Slim enough to fit through a 30-inch door and constructed on four sturdy channels for either hanger rod or slab/floor mounting, the Satellite Precision Environmental Cooling system continues its theme of retrofit flexibility by its availability in air, water/glycol, or chilled water configurations. Retrofitting is simplified because the units can handle existing hookups at any site.
"We also wanted to make life easier on specifying engineers and architects, so we offer CAD drawings of our Satellite systems on our Web site," adds Ambrose. "A designer can simply drag and drop our drawing into his or her auto-CAD plans and drawings."
With the goal of protecting expensive computerized equipment in mind, a variety of options ensure precise relative-humidity control between 20 and 100 percent. Balancing steam-generated humidity against an electric reheat process for dehumidification ensures that dangerous static-electric buildup is diminished throughout the controlled space. Any required humidification enters the room by bypassing the cooling coil thereby preventing over saturation of the air stream and further guaranteeing tight control of relative humidity. High output blowers ensure cool temperatures despite peak-period usage of powerful equipment.
Skil-aire's Satellite Precision Environmental Cooling systems also employ several standard and optional features that help reduce energy costs: Variable Air Volume adjusts fan motors to deliver cooling only as needed; forward-curved fans quietly move large volumes of air at lower RPM; and hydronic economizers cool the space without switching on the compressor.
"The building codes of many major cities now require the installation of economy cooling coils [which utilize chilled water] in front of the evaporator of any cooling equipment over five tons," notes Ambrose. "By using a process we call 'Custom-Quick,' we can add economy cooling coils as part of our normal assembly-line process. We automatically take the specifier's specs directly off the purchase order and integrate them into the construction of the unit, so that building owners don't have to waste valuable time to get the exact system they need."
