South Portland, Me. ? A $12-million expansion at Fairchild Semiconductor?s Portland, Maine site was recently completed by Hodess Building Company and SMRT Architects working in a design build partnership. Due to increased market share and the creation of more than a hundred new products, Fairchild needed additional space for continued growth. Coordinating construction schedules with Fairchild?s need to have the existing facility maintain its productivity levels was critical. ?Working with Hodess as a team was a good, positive experience. Coming in under budget made the whole project a big success? says Tom Golden of Fairchild Semiconductor.
The project involved the construction of a 15,000 square foot, three-story fabrication building that matches, and connects to, the adjoining building. The new facility is steel framed with precast exterior walls and a membrane rubber roof. The work also included 160 relocations and installations of existing and new equipment into the completed facility. The structure features Class 1 clean areas. Work included upgrading systems for chilled water, acid neutralization and waste treatment, along with scrubbed exhaust, de-ionized water, process chemical and gas distribution systems.
