Genome and Biomedical Science Facility

Published September 2007

The new Genome and Biomedical Sciences Facility at the University of California, Davis, is designed to promote collaborative, leading-edge research among scientists and engineers in genomics, bioinformatics, and other areas. The $95-million, 225,000-gsf building houses the UC Davis Genome Center, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and researchers from the School of Medicine including the entire department of pharmacology and toxicology.

The combination of these biologists, engineers, and physicians can provide a new approach to understanding biology and advanced medicine. Core service facilities for genomics, proteomics, and related areas will be housed in the Genome Center, along with 17 faculty. Open labs and shared spaces encourage researchers to exchange ideas.

Biomedical engineering, the newest UC Davis department, combines technology, medicine, and basic biology. Cell and molecular engineering, computational biology, and biomedical imaging are the major research areas. More than $4 million of imaging equipment, including ultrasound PET and CAT scanning, are at the heart of the Center for Molecular and Genomic Imaging.

More than 30 researchers from 11 departments of the School of Medicine have access to conventional wet labs for biology and genetics research. Other equipment includes robotics for high-throughput and DNA analysis, computer labs, and advanced medical imaging facilities.

About the Reported Cost Figures
The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders. Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost adjustments.

Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model. Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which others do not.
