The 150,000-sf, $35-million multidisciplinary facility is the single largest building project in campus history. Promoting the connectivity of math and science, the Center houses labs and classrooms for botany/microbiology, chemistry, geology/geography, math/computer science, physics/astronomy, and zoology. Bigelow Rice Hall, the smaller of the two existing buildings being renovated, contains the math and computer science department, the expanded science library, upgraded classrooms, emeriti faculty offices, and research spaces. A semi-enclosed walkway links the building to the Schimmel Atrium

The 2,500-sf Moore Greenhouse, added to Stewart Hall, has a direct connection to the botany department and features a 25-foot clear ceiling at the ridge. The greenhouse is divided into a potting room, two research rooms, and two collection rooms. The Hobson Science Library, Schimmel Atrium, and well-equipped labs, including a tissue culture room and cold rooms, are also housed in the Science Center. Students and faculty have access to sophisticated equipment including a scanning electron microscope, a research petrographic microscope, infrared spectrometers, and a Fourier transform NMR spectrometer.

Schimmel Atrium serves as a focal point of the Center featuring exhibits and student research posters of the science conducted in the building. The atrium connects and unifies the Science Center both visually and physically, and is used as spill out space for the large lecture halls. A small café provides food service capabilities, and the atrium can be used for large gatherings, and receptions.

Numerous small scale study areas are located throughout the building. Study spaces outside the chemistry faculty offices are available for group work and faculty assistance. Additional study space is available in the library.

About the Reported Cost Figures The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders. Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost adjustments. Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model. Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which others do not.
