Visitors and residents approach the facility from the main drive, arriving at an entry court on the south side of the building where stairs lead directly to the Loyola House's main floor entrance. At this level, the upper three stories of the new residence and the adjacent older campus buildings form a courtyard, the north side left open to views of the City and Bay. Exterior finishes, colors, and details of the residence, similar to those of the adjoining buildings, contribute to the overall coherence of this exterior space. A private garden for the Jesuit residents, with the Chapel as its centerpiece, is defined within the courtyard.
The main floor houses the communal rooms for the house and is divided into two main zones: private spaces used only by the Jesuits and public rooms used by the Jesuit residents and their visitors. The public common areas include the Chapel, casual meeting rooms, administrative offices, and a living/dining area for entertaining small groups. The private living, dining, and snack rooms form a suite of common spaces that have access to the garden.
Twenty-five dwelling units are located on three other floors along with other shared facilities: library, oratory, exercise room, television room, laundry room, and storage rooms. Two lower levels are built into the steep hillside and accommodate parking, storage, mechanical spaces, employee areas, and four of the living units.
The interiors are residential in their scale, finishes, and details. As with the garden, the interior spaces are designed to take full advantage of the spectacular views of downtown and San Francisco Bay.
