Kimmel Cancer Center

Completion Date February 2003
Published March 2001

The new comprehensive Cancer Center located on the Thomas Jefferson University campus will enhance the University's position as a leader in the prevention, treatment, and research of cancer. The programs within the proposed state-of-the-art facility are unique in their ability to offer patients a single location and resource for accessing cancer care services.

The ability of the researchers, clinicians, and patients to interact in an informal and continuous manner allows for the spontaneous conversations crucial to the development and advancement of cancer research and treatment. The design of the cancer center reinforces this vision.

The cancer center will functionally locate both research and clinical programs on the same floor. The research component is designed predominantly in brick, harmonizing and complementing the Thomas Jefferson University campus. The clinical component is designed as a glassy, crystalline element, reinforcing the desire to create an open, non-intimidating environment. The research and clinic components are linked by two-story reception and waiting areas, creating a welcoming environment for patients, clinicians, and researchers to mingle.

The architectural design reflects the dual purpose of the facility and reinforces Thomas Jefferson University's commitment to the urban scale of the neighborhood. The triangular shaped facility allows for the formation of a plaza that is a visual extension of the green space in front of the Bluemle Building. The plaza space is pedestrian oriented. This is reinforced through the ability of the public to circulate along the ground level of the cancer center. An education resource center, retail space, and a 270-seat auditorium are some of the public amenities planned for the ground level.

The laboratory portion of the building will house generic laboratories for biomedical research, clinical research, core facilities, a biological research center, and a vivarium. The building will utilize open, generic, flexible and modular laboratories with research space for 96 Principal Investigators and expansion space for 32 to 36 additional Investigators.

The clinical portion of the facility will also be flexible, housing 36 exam and treatment rooms, 40 infusion spaces, radiation/oncology, MRI, PET scanner, clinical laboratories, and support spaces. In addition, the project will house education and prevention programs, Breast Center, Ambulatory Surgery, a wig bank, an auditorium/conference center, and a new structured parking facility for 290 automobiles.

About the Reported Cost Figures
The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders. Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost adjustments.

Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model. Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which others do not.
