Located on the agricultural campus of Michigan State University, the DCPAH will serve three primary functions: Pathology, Diagnostics, and Case Handling.
Pathology
• Department of Natural Resources Necropsy
• High Bio-Security Necropsy (BSL-3)
• Routine Necropsy
• Pathology Labs
• Incinerator
Case Handling
• Specimen Receiving
• Monorail Transporting System
• Holding Barns
• Animal Processing Chutes
• Tall "In and Out" Coolers
Diagnostic
• Virology Labs
• Fecal Lab
• Tissue Culture Lab
• Bacterial / Mycology Labs
• Toxicology Labs
• Nutrition Labs
• Immuno Diagnostic Labs
• Endocrinology
Key features of the facility will include BioSafety Level-2 and -3 necropsy areas. Comprising nearly one-third of the total building gross square footage, the necropsy areas will receive animal tissue via a sophisticated monorail transportation system. From there, tissue will be analyzed and processed through a series of laboratories designed for testing. Once testing is complete, an incinerator with the capacity of 1200 pounds per hour will destroy all samples thus eliminating the threat of disease escaping the facility.
New information generated from the DCPAH will lead to adaptations and improvements in programs for reducing and eliminating a variety of diseases in animals and wildlife. The DCPAH will also continue to develop new and improved testing capabilities while expanding its capacity to meet growing demands.
HarleyEllis was hired by the State of Michigan to design the new DCPAH, which consolidates the activities of five separate locations. The new facility shared by the Michigan Departments of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Michigan State University utilizes a layout of lab space that follows a systematic pattern for processing and testing.
