The master plan document will act as a road map for future development of that quadrant of the campus. The plan calls for 65,000 sf of new construction and 200,000 sf of renovation in four phases. The design includes development of landscaped courtyards between the science buildings and arcaded walks that tie the science buildings back into the campus fabric. Stone Marraccini and Patterson Architects (SMP) completed the master plan.
Pomona College recently completed the design for the $4-million, 15,500-sf Andrew Math and Physics Laboratory. SMP conducted the programming and schematic design. The project includes intro labs, faculty research labs, combined student/faculty research space, upper division labs, computer classrooms, and faculty offices. The building responds to the Master Plan in a way that respects the design precedents established by Morris Hunt, the original campus architect, in the early part of the 20th Century. However, the College has conceived the Andrew Lab as a "high-tech" building which is to provide the latest developments in instructional technology and "informal" spaces for students and professors to gather and communicate in an unstructured way. These aspects were important considerations for the design of the building. The response by SMP is a highly efficient building which extends the science campus and bridges the facility towards the future expansion of Pomona College.
