 Science Facilities

The Science Facilities organizes its services into three components: laboratories housed in a linear block along the site's north-south axis; classrooms and lecture halls located in a rectangular wing with gable ends running perpendicular to the laboratory block; and faculty offices situated in a cylindrical structure, visible primarily from the west.

The focal point of the facilities?the Commons?is a three-story, skylit polygonal atrium with a helical staircase. This space is intended as a place for informal gatherings and interchange among students and faculty. The facilities extensive mechanical equipment is incorporated in the attic of the laboratory and classroom wings.

The facades are finished with materials, colors and fenestration resembling other buildings on the college campus. The laboratory block and the classroom wing are made of ochre-brown local brick and laid in common bond with pitched slate roofs. The office structure is dark gray brick with a dome skylight of clear glass. The curved wall of the 150-seat auditorium, which emerges from the classroom wing, is clad with veined Kasota limestone laid in stacked bond.

About the Reported Cost Figures
The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders. Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost adjustments.

Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model. Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which others do not.
