Engineering Unit 2

Occupancy: 1994
Published February 1994

The University of California, Irvine's Engineering Unit 2, a research and teaching facility, is located at the College of Engineering. It includes laboratories for programs in civil, mechanical, electrical and computer engineering research and houses an academic computer center, seminar rooms and faculty/administrative offices.

The design of the building separates vibration-sensitive micro fabrication laboratories (located in one wing) from vibration-producing civil and mechanical engineering laboratories (located in the opposite wing). Department and faculty offices are located in the bridge element between both wings to promote interaction and future flexibility for faculty allocation as programs expand or contract. The facility integrates the smaller existing award-winning Engineering Research Building by giving it pre-eminence in the palm tree-lined quadrangle.

The building exterior is a combination of painted poured-in-place concrete with tile trim. The bridge building is lined with tile panels on a steel frame. The principal interior spaces are organized around a main lobby in the east wing with views toward the new quadrangle and a series of interactive spaces located at corridor ends, terraces and balconies.

About the Reported Cost Figures
The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders. Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost adjustments.

Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model. Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which others do not.
