Medical Education and Biomedical Facility
Occupancy: 2001
Published November 2001
The University of Iowa's Health Sciences campus includes the Medical Education and Biomedical Facility, the flagship building for the College of Medicine. The facil-ity includes instructional space for students involved in medical and related clinical programs in addition to research laboratories and support facilities for research.
The medical education area contains interactive classrooms, a computer educational laboratory, study areas, a clinical skills assessment and training center and four distinct student communities. Approximately one-third of the building is dedicated to educational purposes. Research facilities, which account for the remaining two-thirds of the building, include flexible and repetitive laboratory modules that can accommodate a broad range of research types, office and gathering spaces, all organized to promote sharing of resources and interdisciplinary scientific collaboration.
A 250-seat auditorium and a 125-seat seminar room are placed around the "Great Hall," a four story space that connects the medical education and research programs. In addition, this major campus space is strategically located on a pathway at a second floor skywalk adjacent to Eckstein Medical Research Building, integrating the campus with other related teaching and research activities.
The building occupies the site of the previous Steindler Building, the west two-thirds were razed to make way for the new facility. The building is connected with the campus tunnel system and the Eckstein Medical Research Building.
The exterior of the building is modern, reflecting the diverse functional program elements. Consistent with other distinguished contemporary buildings on campus, exterior materials include limestone, metal panels and glass.

The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these
projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders.
Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may
not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some
cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent
a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for
year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost
adjustments.
Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model.
Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while
the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being
supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might
include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals
include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which
others do not.
