Biomedical Sciences Research Building

The Biomedical Sciences Research Building serves as the visual centerpiece for the west end of the Health Science Center at the University of Washington. The facility supports basic science and research programs. The interior spaces of the building are designed to be non-territorial, multi-tenant and non-departmental for maximum flexibility.
Each floor houses 80 to 100 people. Typically, 10 principal investigators occupy each floor. A basic laboratory is designed for six to eight people, but larger and smaller groups can be accommodated. All workstations in the laboratory area are placed at window locations, with flexible laboratory support space adjacent to each research laboratory. Office suites are at the ends of each floor allowing flexibility in group size and assignment. Multiple conference spaces are provided at each floor for up to 40 people with a pantry and covered balcony.
A transgenic animal facility is located in the basement level. Stair and elevator access to this level is controlled by an electronic card key system for security purposes. A 100-seat sloped-floor meeting room for general use is located on the ground-floor level.
The facility design maintains maximum visual awareness of the outdoors from laboratory offices and corridors. Code manipulation eliminates rated corridors and therefore increases usable space. Each hallway is available for interaction, equipment and extension of research activity.

The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these
projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders.
Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may
not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some
cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent
a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for
year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost
adjustments.
Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model.
Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while
the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being
supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might
include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals
include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which
others do not.
