 Buhl Hall Science Building

The Louise C. Buhl Hall of Sciences, originally built in 1930, last renovated in 1966, is one of the main buildings located on the "old academic quad." The project scope included a complete renovation of the existing 19,000-sf Buhl Hall and a 22,000-sf addition. A major design consideration involved amalgamating the modern addition with the rehabilitated, original Georgian building in a manner that was respectful yet evocative of the revitalized sciences. The completed facility includes teaching laboratories for biology, anatomy, ecology, botany, physiology, chemistry, physics and geology, research facilities, shared instrument labs, an animal facility, faculty offices, seminar rooms, student study spaces, and a greenhouse.

The project also includes computer labs for the health sciences and math departments, as well as a 70-seat lecture hall for use by the entire campus. A feature atrium connects all levels of the building and overlooks the Rachel Carson garden while providing a gathering space for special events. A 9' by 12' Tiffany Window that was commissioned by the alumnae of the 1880s, and has been in storage since the 1920s, was restored and will be featured in the atrium as a connection to the Chatham legacy of the past.

This project symbolizes both the revitalization of the College and its dedication to educating young women in the Sciences.

About the Reported Cost Figures
The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders. Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost adjustments.

Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model. Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which others do not.
