In this new facility, research space is significantly increased for faculty-student collaboration; and teaching space is expanded and improved to accommodate the greater emphasis on discovery-based learning in the sciences. Connections are created between departments to facilitate and encourage the increasing interactions between the disciplines, and a safer laboratory environment is provided for faculty and students. The new center includes 80,209 sf of renovations and 150,000 sf of new construction.
The center has been designed to:
- Provide first-rate facilities to meet the needs of the laboratory-based sciences at Oberlin for the next 30 years
- Permit intellectual flexibility and growth within and between the science disciplines
- Strengthen the integration of science education with the other liberal arts, and with institutional life at Oberlin
- Create functional and symbolic connections to the Oberlin campus community
- Make maximum use of existing facilities and recent renovations
