Student Dining Hall

Completion Date January 2000
Published March 2001

St. John's University is the first college or university in the Borough of Queens to offer on-campus living for its students. Implementing Phase I of the $300-million Master Plan, the complex consists of three new residence halls and a new dining facility on the Jamaica campus.

The dining facility, a 45,000-sf structure with a seating capacity of 630, serves as the center of this new on-campus community. The building's mass is formed by three distinct pavilions, which contain the main dining/multi purpose space, the kitchen/servery, and support spaces. The expression of each pavilion differs in its shape, orientation on the site, and fenestration treatment. Roofs vary in form and were conceived as building "hats." A curved roof floats over the main dining space with its structure exposed on the interior. Each functional block opens into an irregular shaped, skylit interior courtyard.

The building is composed of brick with pre-cast stone details and metal clad roofs--in keeping with the three residential halls and in harmony with the materials used throughout the entire campus. With large areas of glass, the main dining/multi-purpose space opens to an exterior terrace and campus quadrangle, creating a community environment. The building also contains a central plant in the basement for cooling the new residential complex.

The construction of this new residential/dining complex on the University's Queens campus enables students from the Metropolitan New York area beyond commuting distance and those from out-of-state or from other countries to pursue the excellence of a St. John's University education.

About the Reported Cost Figures
The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders. Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost adjustments.

Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model. Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which others do not.
