Since its founding in 1889, the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) School of Nursing has provided quality teaching, research, clinical practice, and administration of nursing and health care.
The new 155,000-sf school in downtown Baltimore incorporates advanced classroom and laboratory design, sophisticated distance learning communications technology, and a model, nurse-managed primary care clinic. Research space for clinical, behavioral, health policy, and health services make up more than one-third of the facility. Basic biological and physiological research is practiced in the wet laboratories within the building. A 450-seat auditorium provides a larger venue for teaching and guest speaker presentations.
The distance learning communications technology sets a new standard for nursing education: full-motion, broadcast-quality video to reach and teach students interactively at every corner of the state; nursing informatics laboratories; computer-assisted instruction laboratories; and clinic simulation laboratories.
Classrooms featuring touch-panel controls for videotape recorders, data projectors, and document cameras facilitate teaching through computer technology. Preclinical simulation laboratories place students in actual clinical settings, such as trauma, critical care, wellness clinics, and a neonatal and birthing room, to deal with common problems and emergencies. "Intelligent" mannequins and computer technology create virtual reality learning experiences.

The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these
projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders.
Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may
not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some
cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent
a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for
year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost
adjustments.
Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model.
Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while
the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being
supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might
include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals
include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which
others do not.
