Master Plan Developed

Published July 2002

With the South's burgeoning Catholic population, Southern Catholic's founder, Tom Clements, believed the time had come to establish a Catholic institution of higher learning in the region. Mr. Clements had a clear vision of the type of institution he wanted to build -- a community like the one he knew growing up in Minnesota. To accomplish that vision, The HOK Planning Group modeled the campus plan on a total community concept. The plan calls for a vibrant environment surrounding the actual campus, including a residential area for non-students and a town.

Designed to be built over 15 years, the campus will include more than 1.4 million sf of space, including approximately 730,000 sf of academic, athletic, research, administrative, religious, and support facilities, and approximately 720,000 sf of student residential space to accommodate 80 percent of the student population. Plans also call for a pedestrian-focused town center that is linked to the academic campus, offering retail, multifamily housing, office space and hotel/conference facilities.

The plan takes advantage of Southern Catholic's beautiful setting by creating natural preservation areas along stream corridors, preserving stands of forested areas and providing opportunities for walkways and trails throughout campus, as well as a contemplative setting for a retreat center.

The school plans to open in September 2003, and will accommodate 150 students, with an ultimate enrollment reaching approximately 3,000 students at the conclusion of the campus construction.
