 Whitney Applied Technology Center

The building is organized around four programmatic clusters. A three-story bar perpendicular to a high-bay, industrial lab gives form to the building's L-shaped plan. A double-height lobby connects the two volumes and provides views into the Computer Integrated Manufacturing Lab and to the job placement and counseling center.

The Center is designed to accommodate technological changes by utilizing an accessible corridor distribution system. Labs and classrooms in the bar are served from the corridor side by utilities, power, data, and telecommunications lines on a modular basis. A linear brushed aluminum lighting soffit permits easy access to the modular service elements from either side of the corridor. Lecture rooms contain rear screen projectors and all classrooms have computer and data connections at each student station. A television studio and distance-learning center transmit programs to the campus and the local community.

Lounge areas are located in triangular projections that punctuate the northern elevation and alcoves in the southern facade. This arrangement provides views of the campus gorge and allows light to penetrate the classrooms across the corridor. A linear modular window system draws natural light into the building. On the southern side of the technical arts cluster, perforated metal sunshades provide solar protection to the windows. Kal-wall allows natural light into the high bay industrial labs and minimizes direct sunlight and solar heat gain.

About the Reported Cost Figures
The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders. Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost adjustments.

Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model. Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which others do not.
