Department of Plant Biology Research Labs

The research compound consists of laboratories, administrative offices, nine greenhouses, an algae house, and extensive experimental gardens. The original administration and research buildings were constructed in 1929 with subsequent expansions in 1974, 1993, and 1999. This latest expansion involved the construction of one building and the renovation of two existing buildings. The project added approximately 5,500 sf of research space.

Building 100, originally constructed in 1974, was gutted to the structural shell and reinforced to meet current seismic codes. New additions were integrated on the south and west sides of the building. Because Building 100 is a single-story building with multiple exits directly to grade, there was no need for fire-rated corridors, stairs, or mechanical shafts. This resulted in an extremely compact and efficient floor plan. The new laboratories, support spaces, and researcher offices were arranged in an open plan that takes full advantage of the garden setting by placing large, operable windows at the ends of the aisles between the lab benches.

About the Reported Cost Figures
The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders. Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost adjustments.

Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model. Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which others do not.
