Corporate Headquarters

Completed November 1999
Published June 2000

For its new corporate headquarters in Pleasanton, Calif., Shaklee Corporation--a manufacturer of herbal and nutritional products--wanted to create a work environment that wouldn't clash with the company's health-conscious mission. The corporation has built a facility that supports, and even demonstrates, Shaklee's commitment to environmental responsibility.

The design for the 250,000-sf campus includes offices, labs, a cafeteria, and warehouse space, along with outdoor gardens, a fitness center, and a leadership training center. An estimated 275 employees will occupy the first-phase administration building and leadership center, totaling 130,000 sf. An additional 150 employees will occupy the labs to be built in subsequent phases.

Nearly 10 acres of the 28-acre site have been dedicated to an ecosystem native to the Livermore Valley containing informal meadows, forested areas, and landscaped courtyards. Special demonstration gardens will create a 'living library' of plants from around the world used to create herbal products, including those used in Shaklee health care products.

Shaklee's commitment to the wise use of resources led to a number of sustainable architectural strategies. Underfloor air supply and indirect lighting are energy conservation measures that will improve the quality of the indoor air and increase the effectiveness of the work environment. On the south wall of each building deep window recesses, light shelves, and high performance glass will limit solar gain and maximize daylighting. North-facing atriums and skylights will further reduce the reliance on artificial light.

The $75-million campus will enable Shaklee to consolidate its San Francisco Bay Area divisions. The interior design of the new building fosters a more collaborative working environment by increasing face-to-face interaction among the departments. Informal meeting spaces are scattered throughout the buildings, linked by a network of wider-than-normal circulation spaces. A broad curving spine serves as the entrance lobby and as a display space outside the leadership center, and will connect all the buildings as the campus grows.

About the Reported Cost Figures
The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders. Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost adjustments.

Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model. Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which others do not.
