Technology and Science Complex (TASC2)

Published November 2006

Not knowing who the users would be during planning of the Technology and Science Complex (TASC2) at Simon Fraser University mandated that the design be flexible enough to accommodate whoever may work there in the future. The design incorporates a generic, modular building layout that is highly flexible.

The $59.9 million, 85,000-sf TASC2 includes space for kinesiology, biochemistry, health, earth science, microscopes, lasers, spectrometers, and computing network services. It also provides undergraduate classrooms, space for fisheries research, audio recording studios, faculty offices, and administration offices.

The TASC2 is a modular building that flexibly accommodates the variety of uses of a multi-disciplinary science building. One wing that is divided in the middle by a corridor with lab-width spaces on either side, for example, can just as easily accommodate two corridors lined with offices. Similarly, the lab modules can be doubled up to become classroom modules. A separate wing keeps offices out of the labs. The building also includes an animal research facility and a nanotech and materials sciences lab with vibration-free spaces and cleanrooms.

Researchers pay for any customization they require. The generic design allows for “plug and play” to a variety of systems including HVAC, low-flow fume hoods, and central spines with access to utilities and power.

About the Reported Cost Figures
The cost figures reported are supplied by the firms that submitted these projects for publication, which in most cases are the designers or builders. Whereas these sources are intimately familiar with their projects, they may not be fully aware of the owners' finally-realized and recorded costs. In some cases, costs are truly and completely accounted for, and in others they represent a near approximation of the final costs. Costs have not been adjusted for year of construction, nor has any attempt been made to make regional cost adjustments.

Further, costs are not comparable on any kind of detailed standard costing model. Hence, it is possible for the cost of one building to include a steam boiler, while the cost of a comparable building might not include the boiler, if steam is being supplied from an already existing campus grid. Or, in another case, a building might include excess boiler capacity to supply steam to another building. Some submittals include fees or unusual site improvements as part of the construction costs, which others do not.
