Physical Sciences BuildingCollege of Natural and Agricultural Sciences The facility is designed to accommodate the expansion of existing state-of-the-art multidisciplinary laboratories which serve the various areas of research for the Chemistry Department. It also provides new space for physical sciences instrumentation labs, hybrid and synthetic laboratories, NMR labs, teaching labs, offices, classrooms, departmental support, and a conference center. The simple, U-shaped structure creates a courtyard fronting the Science Walk to the south, and establishes an armature for future building expansion. All three windowed stairwells inside the building allow for visual connection back to the campus or the sky. Casual interior lounges and outdoor courtyard seating areas informal spaces for scholarly exchange. Particularly sensitive to the natural site context, the north elevation was designed with a more organic shape to follow, rather than interrupt, the adjacent arroyo. An existing line of mature trees along the west elevation was preserved. This development looks to enhance the relationship between the formal character of the campus (courtyards, quads and walkways) with their natural counterparts, the dynamic terrain and riparian landscape.
