Oak Ridge National Laboratory The Advanced Microscopy Laboratory (AML) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a new 6,900-sf, world-class microscopy laboratory built to house the latest generation of electron microscopes that can resolve, for example, single isolated atoms, or columns of atoms in a crystal separated (in projection) by less than the diameter of a single atom. The building houses a number of sensitive instruments including transmission electron microscopes, scanning transmission electron microscopes, field-ion microscopes, and other related instruments.
