End User Ownership in Design Process Pays Off
DuPont's new Crop Protection lab building represents the largest relocation of researchers in the chemical giant's long corporate history. Somewhat ironically, the facility began as a 25,000-sf project, blooming to a total 193,000 sf by completion in April 2000.

Online Collaboration Speeds Up Design
How do you collapse the concept and basis of design phases of a research facility down to just 20 weeks? This was the pressing question a Merck Research Labs project team faced when it tackled the planning of a new 195,000-sf research building on the company's Rahway, N.J., campus.

The EPA's newest facility, the New England Regional Laboratory (NERL) in North Chelmsford, Mass., is a testament to the agency's commitment to "walk the talk" in achieving a high level of environmental performance in all its daily operations. The $22.2-million, 69,000-sf building is anticipating the U.S. Building Council's LEED (TM) Gold rating and has received the 2001 Excellence in Construction Award from the Massachusetts Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors.

Pharmacia's Building Q, a new 171,000-sf R&D facility in Skokie, Ill., embodies the latest in environmentally friendly design for high-end laboratories, with features ranging from recycled/recyclable non-toxic materials and 100 percent fresh air ventilation to full daylighting and a building-wide heat retention system.
