The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) has developed an FM Internet portal called FacilitiesLink that represents a powerful new advance in the design of computer aided facility management (CAFM) systems. This sophisticated set of e-tools gives UCSD planners and space managers access to detailed facility information including laser-accurate floor plans, detailed campus maps, and space inventories from any networked computer in the world with nothing more than a standard Web browser.

Lab Features Help Attract, Retain Chemists
Bayer Corporation's 125,000-sf chemistry research building in West Haven, Conn., has increased retention rates for chemists by 50 percent in a highly competitive market. The building, which opened in June 2001, includes state-of-the-art laboratories with 12-foot fume hoods, open access offices, and natural lighting; interaction rooms with scenic views; and a mass spectrometer lab and conference rooms on each floor.

Brigham Young University's response to the ebb and flow of building maintenance and replacement funding is a formal, system-wide Capital Needs Analysis (CNA) office that forecasts asset spending down to the component level 40 years at a time.

Southern Catholic College
