Neighborhoods of Lab Clusters in Genentech Hall Can Adapt for Future Needs When the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) received the rare opportunity to create an entirely new campus, it established strict criteria for the flagship research facility: Architects were told to design the labs to be adaptable, and to group them to encourage interaction among scientists. They also were instructed to make the building beautiful but easy to maintain with minimal disruption to the occupants. By all accounts, Genentech Hall, the 434,000-gsf graduate biomedical research building on the new Mission Bay Campus has succeeded. The $223-million project (including $160-million in construction) was completed in December 2002.
