Shaping Strategies Used for Fast-Track, Large-Scale Development The Scripps Research Institute is extending its legacy in biomedical science from the West Coast to the East Coast by serving as the nucleus for a new biotechnology park in Palm Beach County, Fla. Based in La Jolla, Calif., Scripps is the largest private, non-profit biomedical research organization in the United States and is internationally recognized for its research in immunology, molecular and cellular biology, chemistry neurosciences, cardiovascular and infectious diseases, cancer treatment, and synthetic vaccine development. The La Jolla facility, located in the Torrey Pines Mesa near San Diego, features one million sf of research space in 16 facilities with 2,800 employees.

Costs Come in Well Below Average for Multi-disciplinary Science Structure With time and money being virtually synonymous these days, fast-track construction seems to be more the rule than the exception. But the University of British Columbia (UBC) may have pushed the timeline envelope even farther than usual when it received an appropriation from the provincial government to build a replacement medical school on campus. Accompanying the legislative largesse was a compelling mandate: the new half-million-sf Life Science Centre (LSC) had to be open in time for classes 26 months later, in September 2004.
