Creating the Infrastructure for Tomorrow's Scientific Collaboration Simon Hall, Indiana University's (IU) new $59-million multi-disciplinary science building, is a cutting-edge educational research facility designed by Madison, Wis.-based Flad Architects to maximize collaboration between the University's chemistry, biology, physics, and biochemistry departments. Leads to a Recalculation of the Funding Model As originally conceived, the new BJC Institute of Health at the Washington University in St. Louis would be populated three-to-one by established faculty with an existing well of grant money. The University had to change its funding model when it became clear that the research being proposed there would require more than half the faculty to be new hires. Organized research was originally thought to occupy 66 percent of the space, assuming 1,600 nsf per faculty member; that figure has since been recalculated to 41 percent. The goal was, and still is, to increase organized research to 75 percent of the space by the end of six years.
