Massachusetts Institute of Technology dedicated the new home of the Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing in Cambridge in April of 2024. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed Building 45 as a dynamic campus crossroads where diverse groups can connect and engage in shared discovery. The eight-story, 178,000-sf facility offers sophisticated research environments for the study of artificial intelligence and machine learning. The structure’s first two stories provide a range of settings for gathering, studying, and learning, including a 60-seat classroom and a 250-seat lecture hall. The third level accommodates conference and meeting rooms, with labs and offices on the upper floors.
Targeting LEED Platinum certification, the sustainable development features an expansive green roof and a double-walled façade with glazed shingles. A recently completed utility plant on top of Building 42 supplies heat to the facility in the form of hot water instead of steam. The project was supported by $1 billion in funding, which included an endowment for the creation of 50 new faculty positions and the development of computing resources across the university.
