The University of Oregon Police Department (UOPD) is a community oriented and trust based policing agency within the University of Oregon. The Police Captain is a uniformed command staff position within the University of Oregon Police Department (UOPD). Captains will be assigned and responsible for a variety of senior level leadership roles within the department.
Reporting to the Chief of Police, Captains will have direct oversight of a Division budget and will act as Chief of Police when the Chief of Police has an extended absence. This position will provide administrative, oversight and strategic leadership and supervision of the Operations or Administration Divisions, including supervision and direction over Sergeants, Police Officers, Reserve Police Officers, Community Service Officers, and most other department personnel. This position serves as a representative of the University and the Police department. It will be responsible for building community partnerships based on a community driven Policing philosophy. This position will monitor legal and legislative activities, report findings and recommendations, and implement policy changes as directed.
Captains have regular daily contact with all members of the University of Oregon campus community, students, faculty, staff, administrators, visitors, and members of the public, whilst carrying out law enforcement duties of providing a safe and secure campus. They must exercise sound judgment in safeguarding confidential or sensitive information and they may encounter dangerous situations daily. Occasionally, Captains will encounter highly dangerous individuals. These situations may require quickly determining if force is needed and how much is required to mitigate the threat or effect an arrest. Utilize appropriate charging venue for crimes and violations.
• Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice, business, public administration or a closely related field; OR
• A combination of education and two or more years of progressively responsible and relevant managerial sworn law enforcement experience to include a total of 8 years as a certified police officer with a minimum of 2 years as a police sergeant.
• Must currently be a certified police officer.
• Must adhere to the Clery Act, FERPA, mandatory reporting, and Title IX reporting responsibilities.
