Safety and Risk Services’ (SRS) mission is to collaborate with all campus constituents (students, staff, faculty and visitors) and the surrounding community, to safeguard life and health and mitigate threats to the university’s core mission of academic excellence, research, and public service. Safety and Risk Services comprises Emergency Management and Fire Prevention, Environmental Health and Safety, Campus Geographic Information Systems, Risk Management and the University of Oregon Police Department. SRS fulfills its mission by providing a variety of professional services, technical assistance, trainings, and regulatory oversight.

The purpose of the Laboratory Safety Officer position is to provide professional expertise to the University community in the recognition, evaluation, and control of general laboratory hazards, and to support the SRS mission through close partnerships with the Office of the Vice President for Research, the College of Arts and Sciences, and other campus units. The position involves daily operational control over various functions within the assigned duties, and will assist in program implementation, coordination, and evaluation. Within these duties, this position is expected to recommend detailed strategies for the protection of personnel, property, and process within University laboratories, studios, and related work areas. This includes conducting safety inspections and testing of life safety systems, conducting worksite inspections/hazard evaluations, and conducting training classes.
The Laboratory Safety Officer represents the University’s interest by taking or recommending actions implementing University policies and local and state codes, and communicates effectively with faculty, research, and instructional staff, non-technical staff, and the regulatory community. The Laboratory Safety Officer has the authority, under the direction of the University Laboratory Safety Manager, to help formulate and carry out administrative decisions.
Interactions and contacts occur daily with the campus community in the course of performing work and responding to emergencies. Work is reviewed regularly by the supervisor Laboratory Safety Manager/Biosafety Officer to ensure it is performed efficiently, safely, and meets both expectations and applicable requirements. A performance appraisal is conducted annually.
This position has a “flexible work schedule.” As such, the incumbent must be available to work various shifts and/or hours, including weekends and holidays, with minimal notice.
This unit provides essential services during times of emergency and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times.
• A Bachelor's degree with primary focus (45 quarter hours or 32 semester hours) in the physical sciences; AND
• Two years of related professional experience in environmental, health, or safety; OR
• A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or professional certifications.
Graduate level courses in the subject areas may be substituted, on a credit-hour basis, for a portion of the required experience.
Preference may be given to applicants who have completed graduate-level courses or have additional experience in Industrial Hygiene, or in occupational, public, or environmental programs.
Transcripts must be submitted for all required and/or related courses.
