The University of Illinois is planning to construct the $250 million Discovery Partners Institute in Chicago. The 500,000-sf innovation hub will provide leading-edge classrooms, labs, and collaboration spaces, as well as a multistory atrium and an immersion theater for data visualization. The building will accommodate applied R&D clusters and workforce development initiatives for programs in data analytics and computing. Sited on land donated by Related Midwest, the project is part of The 78, a 62-acre development that will offer three million square feet of research, academic, office, and residential space in the first phase of construction. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill are providing master planning services for The 78.
