University of Plymouth Opens Derriford Research Facility
The University of Plymouth opened the £17 million Derriford Research Facility in May of 2018 in the United Kingdom. Sited adjacent to the Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry at Plymouth Science Park, the 25,000-sf building is the headquarters of the Institute of Translational and Stratified Medicine.
Zoetis Constructs Animal Vaccine Manufacturing & Research Center
Zoetis broke ground in April of 2018 on a 463,000-sf animal vaccine center in Suzhou, China. Combining research and development operations with integrated manufacturing and supply, the facility will produce vaccines for swine, cattle, fish, and companion animals. Offering sophisticated innovation suites and certified GMP laboratories, the project will support research on disease threats prevalent in China with a primary focus on aquaculture.
University of Cambridge Opens Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology Building
The University of Cambridge opened a £60 million facility for the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology in April of 2018 in the United Kingdom. Designed by BDP to promote collaboration and interaction, the 118,400-sf facility features a central atrium, BSL-2 and BSL-3 biological laboratories, cleanrooms, laser labs, optical and imaging suites, and a magnetic resonance research center.
Canadian Food Inspection Agency Plans Centre For Plant Health
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency will invest $80 million to construct a new Centre for Plant Health in Sidney, British Columbia. Replacing the existing 48-building campus, the project will provide advanced quarantine, testing, and diagnostic facilities for the detection and study of plant pathogens. Supporting innovative plant science research programs, the center will enhance the security and economic vitality of Canada's agricultural industry.
University of Otago Constructs Animal Research Facility
The University of Otago is constructing a NZD$50 million animal research building on its south campus in Dunedin, New Zealand. Located near the School of Medicine, the five-story, 42,367-sf facility will feature advanced technologies to optimize the welfare of the mice, rats, guinea pigs, birds, and pigs utilized in the University's research programs. Construction began in August of 2016 and completion is expected in early 2019.
