Hackensack Meridian Health Opens Center for Discovery and Innovation

Hackensack Meridian Health opened the Center for Discovery and Innovation in May of 2019 in Nutley, N.J. Located on the ON3 campus adjacent to Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University, the 250,000-sf translational research facility will accelerate the creation of innovative therapeutics for the treatment of cancer, diabetes, dementia, antibiotic-resistant infections, and autoimmune disorders. The center houses the Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the Institute for Multiple Myeloma, and the Institute for Cancer and Infectious Disease.

First Engineering-Based Medical School Integrates Disciplines with an Eye to the Future

A two-year, $55 million renovation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Everitt Laboratory has transformed the four-story, 136,763-sf building into the first engineering-based medical school in the country, with a focus on medical simulation, research, and instruction. With final completion in June 2018 and the first medical classes starting in July, the Carle Illinois Medical School’s state-of-the-art features enable bioengineering students and future medical professionals to engage in project/problem-based learning and maximize their medical training by using the latest simulation and virtual reality technology.

Orange Coast College Breaks Ground on Kinesiology & Athletics Complex

Orange Coast College broke ground on the $36 million Kinesiology and Athletics Complex in May of 2019 in Costa Mesa, Calif. Designed by Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, the three-building, 88,000-sf project will house division offices, athletic training and adaptive physical education rooms, student support spaces, locker rooms, a 65-meter competition pool, a 25-meter instructional pool, and a covered 450-person bleacher. Midwestern State University Builds Health Sciences Center

Midwestern State University is building the $40 million Centennial Hall in Wichita Falls, Texas. Housing the Gunn College of Health Sciences and Human Services, the four-story, 87,000-sf building will feature an 80-person round classroom, a learning stair, a collaborative student lounge, and a full-height atrium. The center will provide simulation training suites, classrooms, and teaching labs for programs in nursing, dental hygiene, radiologic sciences, respiratory care, and social work.

West Chester University broke ground in April of 2019 on the Sciences & Engineering Center in West Chester, Pa. The three-story structure will provide teaching labs, classrooms, offices, and study areas to support programs in biomedical engineering, health sciences, and physics. The facility will feature an immersive learning center with advanced simulation training technologies for courses in nursing, allied health, psychology, athletic training, and social work, as well as offering space for student services.

The University of Cincinnati opened the $68 million headquarters of the Gardner Neuroscience Institute in April of 2019. Integrating research, education, and outpatient care, the four-story, 114,000-sf facility houses four clinic modules with 14 exam rooms in each for optimal flexibility. The project also offers a 16-bay infusion department, procedure rooms, an imaging suite, an auditorium, a rehabilitation therapy center with an outdoor terrace, a patient lounge, a café, and an underground parking garage.

Banner – University Medical Center Tucson Opens Patient Tower

Banner – University Medical Center Tucson opened a $446 million patient tower in April of 2019. Creating a new main entry for the hospital, the nine-story, 670,000-sf facility provides 228 private patient rooms, diagnostic imaging and cardiac catheterization labs, interventional radiology suites, 20 operating rooms, and a cafeteria. The project team included architect Shepley Bulfinch, engineering consultants AEI and GLHN Architects & Engineers, and joint venture contractor Sundt DPR.

University of Toronto Plans Schwartz Reisman Innovation Centre

Boston University is engaged in a $112 million renovation and expansion of the Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Designed by SmithGroup, the project includes renovation of 53,100 sf of existing space and construction of a seven-story, 41,900-sf addition to provide a 140-seat auditorium, student collaboration areas, classrooms, teaching labs, offices, and clinical space. A new façade will bring natural light into the flexible facility, which will include a café and lounges for students and residents.
