Georgia Gwinnett College Opens Allied Health and Science Building

Georgia Gwinnett College opened the $30 million Allied Health and Science Building in August of 2014 in Lawrenceville. The three-story, 91,000-sf interdisciplinary facility provides laboratories for biology, chemistry, physics, and anatomy and physiology, as well as housing classrooms, faculty offices, and study areas. The second floor of the building accommodates the nursing program and includes a technology-rich classroom for team-based learning and a simulation training center with a 14-bed clinical practice lab.

Boston Medical Center Implements Mobile Facility Management Applications

Boston Medical Center has implemented new mobile facility management applications from Magic Software Enterprises. BMC's new iOS and Android apps are part of the End-to-End Enterprise Mobility Solution and increase the efficiency of hospital technicians who repair equipment across the large campus. The apps enable the immediate rerouting of employees to respond to critical malfunctions as they happen and also allow hospital staff to initiate and monitor service calls and check on the status of incidents at any time.

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Builds Research and Teaching Facility

Alder Hey Children’s Hospital will begin construction in summer of 2014 on a $40 million research and teaching building in Liverpool, U.K. Designed by Hopkins Architects, the 75,000-sf, three-story project will provide research and teaching labs, offices, meeting rooms, lecture halls, breakout spaces, and a library. Comprising two wings adjoining a curved central atrium, the flexible facility will feature a corridor-free interior to encourage interaction and collaboration.

University Hospitals Plans Broadview Heights Outpatient and Emergency Center

University Hospitals will begin construction in summer of 2014 on a $28 million healthcare facility in Broadview Heights, Ohio. Sited on six acres, the 52,000-sf project will include a freestanding emergency department and outpatient care facilities providing primary and specialty care, physical therapy, surgery, women's health, pediatrics, cardiology, and laboratory services. Completion is expected in late 2016.

Bay Path College Builds Center for Graduate Studies in Health Sciences

Bay Path College is building the Center for Graduate Studies in Health Sciences in East Longmeadow, Mass. The $16 million facility will provide classrooms, laboratories, training rooms, faculty offices, conference rooms, and administrative space. Construction began on the two-story, 56,000-sf facility in November of 2013 and completion is expected in early 2015.

MaineGeneral Alfond Center for Health Attains LEED Gold

MaineGeneral Alfond Center for Health in Augusta is the first facility in Maine and the second in the nation to attain the new 2010 LEED Gold for Healthcare certification. The Integrated Project Delivery Team (IPD) included the joint venture architectural firms SMRT and TRO Jung|Brannen and the joint venture construction team of HP Cummings Construction Company and Robins & Morton.

UConn Health Center Builds Outpatient Pavilion

UConn Health Center is building a $203 million outpatient care pavilion in Farmington, Conn. The eight-story, 300,000-sf facility will provide consolidated ambulatory care services to maximize patient convenience and will feature flexible, 120-sf exam rooms shared by different departments. The project will house the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Comprehensive Spine Center, primary care, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, women's health, neurology, rheumatology, physical therapy, urology, surgery, and imaging.

Northwestern Medicine Plans Lake Forest Replacement Hospital

Northwestern Medicine is planning to construct a replacement facility for Lake Forest Hospital in Illinois. Designed to provide flexible, patient-centered care, the 483,500-sf project will include 114 private inpatient beds, 72 outpatient care rooms, eight surgical suites, and an imaging center. LEED Silver sustainable design certification will be sought for the facility, which is slated for completion in mid-2017.

University of Tampere Builds Medical Teaching and Research Facility

The University of Tampere began construction in June of 2014 on a $64 million medical teaching and research building in Finland. The 273,400-sf project is being built by NCC Construction and will provide instructional space, teaching and research labs, and administrative offices. Completion is expected in May of 2016.

Bristol Community College Breaks Ground on Health and Science Building

Bristol Community College broke ground on the $27 million Sbrega Health and Science Building in May of 2014 in Fall River, Mass. Designed by Sasaki Associates, the 46,000-sf collaborative facility will accommodate programs in biology, biotechnology, chemistry, clinical laboratory science, dental hygiene, environmental science, medical technology, microbiology, and nursing. The building will include classrooms, teaching labs, offices, and an atrium. The construction manager for the project is BOND.

Arkansas Tech University Plans Allied Health Building

Arkansas Tech University will begin construction in October of 2014 on a 20,273-sf allied health building on the Ozark campus. Supported by $6 million in revenue bond funding, the two-story facility will provide technology-rich teaching labs and clinical simulation suites as well as faculty and staff offices, three computer labs, and a testing center. Completion is expected in November of 2015 with occupancy in spring of 2016.

Memorial Hermann Hospital Expands in Houston

Memorial Herman Hospital will begin construction in summer of 2014 on a $650 million expansion of its Houston facility. The project includes the addition of 24 operating rooms, 16 emergency bays, 160 inpatient beds, parking, and a café. Six floors of shell space will be built to accommodate future growth. Completion is expected by 2018. Memorial Herman is the primary teaching hospital for the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Medical School.

Panola College Breaks Ground on Smith Health Science Center

Panola College broke ground on the $35 million W.C. Smith Health Science Center in May of 2014 in Carthage, Texas. The 76,000-sf facility will provide science classrooms, a simulation training lab, a lecture hall, and teaching labs for programs in nursing, biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and microbiology. Completion is expected in July of 2015.

University of Chicago Medicine Plans Orland Park Facility

The four-story, 120,000-sf facility will provide orthopedic and radiation oncology services, as well as other medical specialties such as cardiology, gastroenterology, pediatrics, and women’s health.
