Amberwave Systems’ new fabrication facility in Salem has been completed. The structure comprises a 6,000-sf cleanroom manufacturing space and 25,000-sf base building and office space. Plymouth, Mass.-based Lloyd Architects designed the building. General construction services were provided by Hodess Building Co. of North Attleboro, Mass. Staughton, Mass.-based Am Tech Engineers Inc. designed the mechanical systems.
Jusung America Inc., a Korean semiconductor equipment manufacturer with a US headquarters in Austin, is considering the construction of a 50,000-sf manufacturing and office facility to accommodate 300 people. A 20-acre site near the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is under consideration. It is anticipated that construction would take two years and cost tens of millions of dollars. The company is a subsidiary ofJusung Engineering Co. Ltd. of Korea.
Data-Centers Now, based in Rockville, Md., is planning CyberPlex@Dulles, a project comprising office space (2.4 million sf), telecom and Internet space (860,000 sf) and an electricity substation to provide power to the facility. The fortress-like data center, housing critical computer data and equipment, will be located at a 425-acre site in eastern Loudon County. The project is valued at $50 million over the next 10 years.
Nvidia, a computer-chip design firm based in Santa Clara, Calif., is expanding at the Meridian Office Park in Durham. The fabless semiconductor company will leave a 7,700-sf building at the Park for a 25,000-sf building next door. The company will move its 38 employees and a Ping-Pong table in January 2002 to the new structure, which will provide space for lab work and additional employees.
RF Micro Devices Inc., based in Greensboro, plans to upgrade its clean-room manufacturing space. The two-year, $58-million project will also provide new semiconductor manufacturing equipment for its partner, Agere Systems Inc., in Orlando, Fl., to produce high-performance chips for communications products. RF Micro will also build a facility in Beijing to test and finish chips for the Chinese market.
Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC), based in San Diego, has plans for a three-building, 521,000-sf manufacturing facility in nearby Poway. The 31-acre site at South Poway Business Park will accommodate one 90,000-sf structure, one 120,000-sf structure, and one 311,000-sf structure. The initial phase of construction is expected to take two years. AMCC manufactures optical networking products.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is scouting cities in central Texas for 200 acres on which to locate a proposed 300 mm chip fabrication plant. Cities under consideration include Austin, San Marcos, Buda, and Round Rock. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2004 at an estimated cost of $4 billion. Austin is home to AMD's existing 200mm fab.
Tivoli Systems Inc. will consolidate its headquarters and scattered Austin-area offices at a new one million-sf campus adjacent to the local office of its parent company, IBM Corp. The two-phase project broke ground in November 2000 with a 200,000-sf structure to accommodate 700 employees. Phase two construction will include three additional buildings of the same approximate size, one housing a cafeteria. HOK Architects designed the campus. Engineering was provided by Bury+Partners Inc. The landscaping was done by Verdoorn Landscape Architects Inc.
Iomega Corp. is relocating its corporate headquarters to 10,000 sf in San Diego within the next six months. One hundred marketing and executive staff members will be moved, with the company's R&D operation remaining in Roy, Utah.
Cypress Semiconductor plans to install a $2.1-million, 335-kW solar power array at its new administrative facility in San Jose, providing about 12 percent of Cypress’ energy. The three-story building is scheduled to open in January 2002, and the solar energy system installed by PowerLight Corp. of Berkeley, Calif., is expected to pay for itself in seven years. The system can be retrofitted as technology improves, and is expected to last 25-30 years.
Semiconductor manufacturer Extreme Devices is expanding by opening a bigger chip fabrication plant with adjoining offices in Southeast Austin. The combined 43,200-sf facility is a significant expansion from the firm's previous 6,000-sf location. The fabrication plant has cost Extreme Devices less than $10 million to build.
Gigawave Technologies of San Antonio is preparing to move from an outgrown 3,000-sf into a new 10,000-sf facility. Gigawave provides training services for Cisco Systems and for companies installing new wireless LANs.
Charlotte, N.C.-based Digital Optics Corp. has moved into a 100,000-sf manufacturing facility on 7 acres in University Research Park. Over the next five years the photonic chip manufacturer plans to triple its facilities on the site.
Intel has awarded Braintree-based Integrated Builders a $3 million, 80,000-sf office renovation contract in Hudson.
Iomega Corp. of Utah is considering locations in Southern California for relocation of its headquarters. The high capacity diskette, drive, and data storage maker is favoring Orange County sites over San Diego at present, due to the grouping of data storage companies in the area and a large labor pool. In addition to relocating some of the 500 employees currently housed at the firm's headquarters near Salt Lake City, Iomega hopes to draw new staff that were previously deterred by location. Some Utah facilities will be retained in the move.
