University of Central Florida Breaks Ground on College of Nursing

The University of Central Florida broke ground in January of 2024 on a new home for the College of Nursing at Lake Nona Medical City in Orlando. Designed by Ayers Saint Gross and HuntonBrady, the Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion will address a statewide shortage of healthcare professionals by enabling the university to graduate an additional 150 nurses each year. The $68 million development will provide classrooms, flexible instructional venues, wet and dry labs, offices, and study zones.

University of Virginia Breaks Ground on Manning Institute for Biotechnology

The University of Virginia broke ground on the $350 million Paul and Diane Manning Institute for Biotechnology in December of 2023. Located in the Fontaine Research Park in Charlottesville, the 350,000-sf project will drive innovation in the fields of cellular therapy, gene therapy, nanotechnology, and drug delivery. By collocating state-of-the-art labs and core facilities with advanced manufacturing suites and clinical environments, the four-story building will accelerate the translation of medical discoveries into new solutions for patient care.

Brown University Plans Integrated Life Sciences Building

Brown University is planning to construct the 300,000-sf Integrated Life Sciences Building (ILSB) in Providence’s Jewelry District. Designed by TenBerke and Ballinger, the seven-story facility will provide six levels of wet and dry laboratories for research programs in biology, medicine, neuroscience, bioengineering, and public health. A publicly accessible ground floor will offer a forum, a gallery, and a café, with a pedestrian thoroughfare for enhanced access to nearby buildings.

Designed by Perkins&Will and Coleman Partners Architects, the four-story, 155,000-sf facility features a 500-seat auditorium-in-the-round, three 250-seat active learning classrooms, and 27 flexible instructional venues. Simulation suites and clinical skills labs leverage immersive technologies to enhance experiential education and training.

The University of South Alabama broke ground in December of 2023 on a dynamic new home for the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine in Mobile. Designed by Perkins&Will and Eskew Dumez Ripple, the $200 million facility will address a nationwide shortage of physicians by enabling the first-year class size to increase from 80 to 100, with the capability to accommodate 125 students in the future.

University of Nebraska Medical Center Breaks Ground on Campus Operations and Research Excellence Building

University of Nebraska Medical Center broke ground in November of 2023 on the $105 million Campus Operations and Research Excellence (CORE) building in Omaha. Designed by LEO A DALY, the six-level, 180,870-gsf structure will feature three stories of state-of-the-art wet labs, including a 30,800-sf floor for research programs in oncology, drug discovery, and other strategic priorities. Approximately 61,600 sf of leasable shell space will accommodate private tenants or supply additional capacity for future growth.

University of Kentucky Breaks Ground on Health Education Building

The University of Kentucky broke ground in October of 2023 on the $380 million Health Education Building in Lexington. Representing the largest academic development in the university’s history, the 500,000-sf facility will strategically collocate programs in medicine, public health, nursing, and health sciences. Approximately 77 percent of the space will be devoted to education and training, including 25 percent for teaching labs and classrooms, and 34 percent for simulation and experiential learning.

Providence College broke ground in late September of 2023 on the Ben Mondor Center for Nursing and Health Sciences. Designed by The S/L/A/M Collaborative, the 125,000-sf facility will provide teaching labs, active learning environments, faculty innovation labs, and a 100-seat auditorium. Featuring state-of-the-art anatomy and physiology labs with Anatomage tables, the five-story building will include clinical simulation suites with augmented and virtual reality technologies to enable immersive, experiential education.

Created by the design-build team of CO Architects and Hensel Phelps, the 95,478-gsf facility offers 56,500 asf of innovative learning and support space. The first three floors of the five-story structure are dedicated to instruction and collaboration, augmented by sophisticated audiovisual technologies throughout.
