Clinical Professor, Comparative Medicine

Dr. David Bentzel earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Bioscience from the Pennsylvania State University. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine prior to entering active duty in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps. He completed a combined Lab Animal Medicine Residency and Master of Public Health program at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). His post-residency lab animal assignments included directing animal research programs at various Department of Defense institutions in the U.S. and overseas and culminated with his last assignment prior to retirement as the Director, Veterinary Medicine Division, U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (ABSL 3&4). He also served as the Laboratory Animal Medicine Consultant to the Army Surgeon General and is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College. 

He currently serves as the Associate Director, Veterinary Service Center and the Director, Laboratory Animal Medicine Residency Program in the Department of Comparative Medicine of the Stanford University School of Medicine. Additionally, he holds a faculty position at the level of Clinical Professor. 

He is board certified by both the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. He currently serves as a Council Member on AAALAC International’s Council on Accreditation. His professional areas of interest and expertise include biocontainment, animal welfare, and regulatory compliance.
