The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is engaged in a five-year, $40 million renovation of its laboratory space at the John Wesley Powell Building in Reston. The sixth phase of an eight phase project, the renovation will create state-of-the-art labs enabling the USGS to provide reliable biological science information. Designed by Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann, the general contractor for the project is Grunley Construction, with Bovis Lend Lease as construction manager. The 100,000-sf renovation will include upgrades to the HVAC system to maintain negative air pressure, fifty percent redundancy on the main exhaust fans, fume hoods, and the construction of an emergency decontamination station including a shower and an eyewash. Completion is expected in 2005.
