Shanghai Tower Breaks Ground

Shanghai Tower Construction and Development Corporation broke ground on the 128-story Shanghai Tower on November 28, 2008. Designed by Gensler, the project will stand 2,074 feet tall and will be the tallest building in China. Housing offices, retail, and a hotel, the double-skinned building will feature an unenclosed observation deck, windmill generators, and rainwater collection facilities. The project team includes structural engineer Thornton Tomasetti, M/E/P engineer Cosentini Associates, and the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tongji University.
