EU Launches €1.2 Billion Energy Research Initiative

The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) has launched a €1.2 billion initiative to develop wind, solar, and nuclear power in the European Union. The WindScanner research facility in Denmark will cost between €45 million and €60 million to build. The €960 million MYRRHA nuclear research reactor will be sited in Belgium. The €80 million EU-SOLARIS facility will be built at the Advanced Technological Centre for Renewable Energy in Spain. Additionally, ESFRI has identified in its Roadmap 2010 that there are 50 new research infrastructures or upgrades needed in the next twenty years with an estimated construction value of €20 billion.
