Knighthead Capital Management is planning to construct a $1.6 billion sports facility for Birmingham City Football Club in the United Kingdom. Designed by MANICA Architecture and Heatherwick Studio, the 62,000-seat stadium will feature a retractable roof and a moveable pitch to enable year-round flexibility for national and international sports games, music concerts, and large-scale cultural events. A steep bowl layout will maximize fans’ proximity to the field, and high-performance acoustics will amplify the sound of the crowd while mitigating exterior noise pollution. Reflecting the city’s industrial heritage, twelve distinctive chimney structures will support the roof, enhance passive ventilation, and house elevators and staircases. One tower will accommodate a bar with skyline views to foster an immersive social atmosphere. Completion is slated for August of 2030.
This vibrant development will anchor the planned Sports Quarter, a transformational precinct that will feature a 10,000-seat women’s stadium, an 18,000-seat arena, an academy, and an elite training center. The district will offer three million sf of mixed-use space for offices, hotels, retail environments, residential areas, and entertainment venues to benefit the local community. Prior + Partners are providing masterplanning services for the Sports Quarter, and other firms lending their expertise include Deloitte, AFL Architects, WSP, and Field Operations. The entire project represents an approximate investment of up to $3.2 billion. Knighthead Capital Management is a private investment firm based in New York City.
