The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is renovating Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York. Designed by ROSSETTI to deliver a premium experience within an immersive environment, the $800 million development will extend the lower bowl upwards to add 2,000 seats, bringing the total capacity to 5,000. The upper bowl will be partially demolished to accommodate two dedicated levels of luxury suites. Creating more open space for fans, modernized and expanded concourses will feature world-class hospitality venues and club areas, retail amenities, and enhanced dining and concessions options. New escalators will ease crowd flow, and an external video board will enable match viewing from outside the structure.
As part of the transformation, a $250 million player performance center will be added to the campus. The 300,000-sf facility will occupy the top two stories of a new four-floor building adjacent to the practice courts. Large indoor and outdoor fitness zones will be complemented by medical suites, redesigned locker rooms, lounges, and spa-inspired recovery settings. Athlete wellbeing will also be promoted through access to an open-air courtyard and a private café.
Representing the nucleus of the wider USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Arthur Ashe Stadium will be upgraded over three phases in between hosting the US Tennis Open Championships. Major structural work will take place from 2025-2026, followed by mechanical and electrical work and finishes. AECOM Tishman is slated to deliver the development ahead of the 2027 tournament in August. WSP is the structural engineer and structural steel detailing model designer, and Studio Libeskind acted as associate architect for the 110-foot-tall gates that form a new grand entrance. The project team also includes Owen Steel and Orange County Ironworks.
