University of Florida Completes Biosafety Research Complex
The University of Florida has recently completed a modular research complex of BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory space. Buildings for Science, a division of Britz-Heidbrink, completed the design, production, and installation of this world-class research facility in less than one year. The complex has its own mechanical room area, an office-break area, a unisex bathroom/change area, a pass-through shower into the BSL-3 lab with accommodating locker space, and two separate procedure areas.
OHSU Constructs Primate Facility
Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) is constructing a new $35,000-sf facility at its Oregon National Primate Research Institute in Beaverton. Slated for completion in June 2004, the $11-million research facility will house 900 rhesus monkeys, adding 450 new animals to the site.
NCSU Breaks Ground on Centennial Biomedical Campus Facility
North Carolina State University has broken ground on a $35-million, 100,000-sf research facility, the first structure of the Centennial Biomedical Campus at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Tops Out Research Facility
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center has topped out its new $221.9-million George and Cynthia Mitchell Basic Sciences Research Building. Slated for completion and initial occupancy in November, the 18-story, 500,000-sf facility is expected to be fully operational in June 2004. Located in Houston's Texas Medical Center, the building will house six floors of research laboratories, an auditorium, conference facilities, small-animal vivariums, and classrooms for the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston.
California Department of Health Services Project Nears Completion
The California Department of Health Services is nearing completion of its Richmond, Calif., complex. Construction manager McCarthy has guided the project's two phases, totaling more than 475,000-sf of offices, life sciences laboratories, animal facilities and warehousing space. The largest non-design-build project ever undertaken by the State of California, the $130-million project completes in January 2003 after a 4-year construction schedule.
